A system and method for processing documents (52) each carrying a unique identifying code (60) and variable data, such as e.g. handwritten amount characters (68).
In a learning mode of the system recognition data is generated representing feature characteristics of the handwritten characters (68) which data is stored in a storage means at addresses corresponding to the identifying codes (60) associated therewith. In a reading mode of the system the identifying codes (60) of documents (52) to be processed are read and the recognition data stored at the address of each identifying code (60) read is retrieved by computing means and transferred to an optical reading means enabling the latter to recognize and read the handwritten amount characters (68) associated with the respective identifying code (60).
In generating the recognition data, keyboard means are provided for entering information pertaining to certain characteristics of the handwritten characters (68).
