A device for preparing an analytical control solution of an analyte comprising a base support member having affixed thereto an analyte composition comprising a water soluble polymer and the analyte. The analyte composition is at least partially embedded in the support member. Also disclosed is a method for making the device whereby a coating solution containing the water soluble polymer, the analyte and an etchant is applied to a base support member. A method for using the device comprises immersing the device into a predetermined volume of water for a predetermined time.
