Agents containing the three main constituents, metal, an organic nitrogenous compound selected from the amino groups, amine salts and quaternary ammonium compounds containing at least one organic hydrophobic group, and ammonia, ammonium salt or a short-chain amine has very satisfactory characteristics for countering timber- destroying fungi. The timber preservatives are especially satisfactory agents for protecting timber against decay. The metal in the agent is a so-called preservative metal, suitably copper, tin or zinc and is preferably copper.
