A machine for producing a plurality of plastic bags from one or more foil webs folded together to form a foil strand is described. This machine has a transport apparatus for advancing the foil strand in steps, welding jaws (11, 11') for making transverse welding seams extending transversely relative to the direction of transport (A) and limiting adjacent bags (100, 101) in the foil strand, an additional pair of jaws (13, 13'), parallel to the welding jaws (11, 11') and at a distance behind these in the direction of transport (A), for consolidating and smoothing the welding seams made by the welding jaws, and a severing device (20) for cutting off the respective foremost bag (101), provided with two transverse welding seams, from the foil strand. The two pairs of jaws (11, 11'; 13, 13') can be closed and opened synchronously with one another transversely to the direction of transport (1) by means of a common adjusting device (14, 14'). A special drawing-off device, arranged behind the pair of welding jaws (11, 11'), has two pressing jaws (12, 12') which are urged resiliently towards one another approximately in the plane (19) of the foil strand and which, during the opening of the welding jaws (11, 11'), reliably draw off the foil strand from the welding jaws in the direction of transport (A) and thereby guarantee a rapid and virtually maintenance-free production cycle. <IMAGE>
