The continuously variable transmission (Fig. 1) consists of a mechanical variator (10) with three planetary gear sets (12, 14, 16) connected to its output, between an input shaft (18) and an output shaft (20). The design and the transmission ratios of the planetary gear sets are chosen so that the range of transmission ratios of the transmission is considerably larger than that of the mechanical variator, which has a limit of, for example, 6 : 1. The invention approximately doubles this range for the transmission. During the regulation of the transmission ratio, one of the planet carriers (36) is used to feed torque back to the input (22) of the variator. A direct drive between the input and the output shaft can additionally be provided, for which purpose an arbitrarily actuable lock-up clutch is provided between them. In this condition, internal losses and wear can be reduced by fixing one element (48) by means of a selectively operable brake (47). As variators, use can be made of any known designs which allow a suitable configuration of the transmission for the particular application, especially as regards the relative position of the input shaft and the output shaft. Belt drives with a continuously variable transmission ratio are advantageous as variators for vehicle transmissions. <IMAGE>
