<p>PURPOSE:To easily obtain the titled compound in high yield and purity on an industrial scale at a low cost, decreasing the amount of generated CO2, by oxidizing pseudocumene with an O2-containing gas in the presence of a Co-Mn-Br catalyst having a specific compositional ratio dividing the reaction into two stages with different reaction temperatures. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced by two-stage oxidation reaction of pseudocumene (= 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene) with an O2-containing gas in acetic solvent in the presence of a catalyst composed mainly of a cobalt compound, a manganese compound and a bromine compound at 110-180 deg.C and then at 180-230 deg.C. The amount of Co metal and Mn metal in the catalyst is 0.01-1.0wt% each based on the acetic acid solvent and that of bromine atom is 0.01-2.0wt%. The atomic ratio of bromine atom to the sum of Co and Mn (Br/Co+Mn) is 2.51-2.99. The catalyst can be recycled and reused. The titled acid is useful as a raw material for plasticizer, heat-resistant polymer, etc.</p> |
