In the metallurgical treatment of Pb accumulator scrap in a vertical furnace, fly-ash rich in Pb and contg. chloride is obtd. The fly-ash is mixed with lime, and is roated at 650-850 deg.C. in a rotary drum furnace, using an oxidising atmos., to produce clinker and a metallic phase, which are quenched in water. The clinker and the metallic phase are then treated in a conventional manner to reclaim Pb. Gas leaving the rotary drum furnace is fed through a dust extractor using water; and the solids collected from the water are recycled to the rotary drum furnace. The fly-ash is pref. moist or in the form of a slurry when fed into the rotary drum furnace. Pb accumulator scrap contains separators made of PVC, so that when the scrap is treated in a vertical furnace, fly-ash contg. Pb and chloride is produced. An inexpensive method is provided for treating the fly-ash.
