Solar energy cell made of semicrystalline silicon formed of individual grains of silicon having portions at the cell's light-receiving surface. An electrical junction is formed at the said light-receiving surface (11) and extends across and beneath the said surface, and, inside and between the boundaries of the adjacent grains (13), has a value such that the total junction area substantially exceeds the product of the linear dimensions of the surface of the wafer but does not extend completely around the boundaries of the silicon grains or as far as the opposite surface (12) of the wafer.
