The hopper wagon has one or more openings at the bottom for the discharge of the material contained. Each opening (3) is in a inclined plane, and is shut by a hatch (4), also in an inclined plane, pressed against it by a roller mechanism (11,12) which moves it clear in a plane not parallel to its own. The hatch can be moved horizontally in a direction perpendicular to the vertical central lengthwise plane of the opening.
