<p>A device for severing wire reinforced plastics hose, made by extrusion over moving mandrels located end to end, comprises a carriage located on the path of the hose and carrying means to detect a connection between successive mandrels. The carriage also carries a hose gripping device and means to transversely move a cutter over the carriage. In use, when a connection is detected, control means act to cause the gripping device to grip the base and move in the hose direction faster than the extrusion speed, thereby separating the mandrels at the connection and locally stretching the hose. The cutter is then actuated to move through and sever the stretched region. Finally the mandrel is removed from within the thus separated length of hose. Cutting is effected with a minimum of waste at the mandrel ends.</p> |
