The guide device uses a pair of crawler tracks (2,3) mounted on either side of the cylindrical section rod and pressing against the rod as it moves forward. The crawler tracks have ridges (24,34) mounted perpendicular to the track, pressing against the rod. The ridges have a cut-out (25-35) shaped to fit over the exterior of the rod. The crawler tracks are on a mobile mounting and a source of pressure (P), such as hydraulic cylinders, is used to provide adjustable force between the crawler tracks and the rod. Two dies are mounted one at each end of the crawler tracks so the rod passes through them to cut the grooves for later insertion of optical fibres.
