Internally reinforced mastic strips for wrapping cable junctions - to resist penetration by local sharp ends or edges

Strip of self adhesive mastic material incorporates a layer of tear-resistant material between two layers of the mastic matl. Suitable for overwrapping junctions in electrical or telecommunication cables, to provide resistance to local penetration by sharp edges, protruding wires, etc. Also suitable for enclosing valve stems for injection of fluids, such as air or cold setting resins, into armour-sheathed cables. The tear-resistant layer may be a net or fabric or a sheet or film of tear-resistant rubber or plastic film. The mastic coatings may be of similar or differing thickness, but are thicker than the intermediate reinforcing layers, e.g. 0.5-2 mm compared with 0.25-0.75 mm. The coatings and/or the reinforcing layers may be electrically conductive, e.g. metallised film or the mastic may contain a conductive filler, opt. distributed to produce non-linear electrical resistance. The tear-resistant layer may be of polyolefin, PVC, polyester, polycarbonate or cellulosic material. Prior to use, the mastic coatings may be protected by a removable film.
