The air conditioning system consists of a heat pump (30) which supplies heat to a low temperature heating system (20) and a water heater (21). The heat pump is connected to an absorber (10) which receives heat from the ambient air. The heat pump is also connected to a heat storage system (11) which is in contact with the soil. The absorber is a massive concrete structure, containing coils of piping through which the heat transfer fluid flows, and is placed in the open air. The absorber also serves as a short-term heat store. The long-term heat store, in contact with soil, is also a massive concrete structure. A control system (30) regulates valves and pumps in the system to suit variations in the heating or cooling demand and the available supply of heat.
