The invention relates to a continuously vertically adjustable column consisting of a blockable pneumatic spring, the blocking device of which has a centrally arranged actuating tappet connected to a blocking valve and located at one end of the column. A carrier plate is fastened at this end on a tubular or conical part of the column by means of a corresponding tubular or conical extension, and an actuating lever is mounted in an orifice of the extension and is connected positively to the actuating tappet. A simple mounting for the release lever, without a weakening of the chair column, is achieved in that the actuating lever mounted in the orifice of the extension of the carrier plate and connected to the actuating tappet by means of a catch device has an at least virtually play-free mounting relative to the actuating tappet, which mounting is formed by a stop part acting on the actuating lever, as shown by way of example in Figure 1. <IMAGE>
