The invention relates to a shock absorber with a piston-cylinder unit, a regulating valve and an oil circuit with infinitely variable speed regulation in one direction and rapid return in the other direction. The new shock absorber has a piston-cylinder unit (1) which is connected externally to a speed-regulating valve (1). The piston-cylinder unit (1) expediently comprises an oil-filled cylinder (3) which is sealed off at one end by a cylinder cap (4) and, at the other end, by the bottom (5) of the cylinder. The cylinder cap (4) has a central hole (6) through which passes in a form-fitting manner the piston rod (7) of the piston (9) which can be moved backwards and forwards in the cylinder chamber (8). Seated between the piston (9) and the bottom (5) is a return spring (12) and in the bottom (5) of the cylinder is a hole (14) which leads to the outside from the cylinder chamber (4). <IMAGE>
