In gas-forming electrolysis devices, in particular membrane electrolysers, the removal of gas presents difficulties, particularly with a close electrode spacing. However, for energy consumption reasons, a close electrode spacing is desirable. As a remedy, electrode plates to be arranged vertically in gas-forming electrolysers have already been provided with horizontally and continuously extending plate gaps and with guidance devices in the region of the gaps for removing the gases evolved. In order to avoid energy losses and to ensure rapid gas removal, in a device of the type mentioned, the entire active electrode surface of the individual electrode plate is, according to the invention, arranged parallel to, and at the shortest spacing from, the counterelectrode and the guidance device is angled at the respective upper edges of the plates of the counterelectrode.
