The invention relates to a process for the preparation of isomer-free N-alkylsulphonylphenylenediamines of the general formula I <IMAGE> in which R<1> denotes hydrogen or optionally substituted C1-C6-alkyl, and R<2> denotes optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl, or a radical of the formula <IMAGE> in which R<3> and R<4> are alkyl groups or, together with the nitrogen atom, form a 5-membered or 6-membered ring which is optionally interrupted by a heteroatom, characterised in that compounds of the general formula II <IMAGE> in which R<1> has the abovementioned meaning, are selectively reacted with a sulphonyl halide of the formula III <IMAGE> in which R<2> has the abovementioned meaning and Hal represents fluorine, chlorine or bromine, in the presence of an alkaline earth metal oxide or carbonate at a pH of 3 to 7, and in the presence of a diluent, at temperatures of from -20 to +40 DEG C. The compounds prepared according to the invention are highly suitable for use as diazo components.
