In a system of elements, having a one-dimensional extent, individual elements are arranged in a row, each of which can execute movements with respect to the adjacent elements. The elements are connected via joints to one another, some of which are constructed as rotating joints and others as pivoting joints, the sequence of joints and the construction of the elements corresponding to a predetermined folding arrangement. The elements fit into a cross-sectional grid which is the same for all elements. They may have a square cross-section. Some pivoting joints permit a pivoting angle of 180 DEG , while others permit a pivoting angle of 360 DEG . At least one pivoting element has two pivot bearings, the one of which forms a pivoting plane which is offset through 90 DEG with respect to that of the other.
