The present invention relates to a method for the production of water-dilutable binders based on oxidatively drying, oil-modified alkyd resins and the use of these binders in air-drying and forced-drying paints. After addition of crosslinking agents, the products can also be used for the formulation of stoving lacquers. A) 15 to 50 % by weight of a polyester serving as the carrier resin, with the general construction principle <IMAGE> where R represents a radical of a tetravalent alcohol, preferably of pentaerythritol, whose hydroxyl groups are partially reacted with unsaturated oil fatty acids, optionally mixed with cyclic monocarboxylic acids (radicals R1) and under hemiester formation with anhydrides of aromatic, cycloaliphatic or aliphatic dicarboxylic anhydrides (radicals R2) as well as with aromatic, cycloaliphatic or aliphatic dicarboxylic acids and/or diisocyanates (radicals X) and where R3 can be equal to R1 or OH and n can be equal to 0-3, the fatty acid content being between 20 and 50 %, the acid number being between 50 and 100 mg of KOH/g and the components containing at least 1 hydroxyl group per 1000 g, and B) 50 to 85 % by weight of an alkyd resin prepared in a customary manner, dissolved in organic solvents, preferably white spirits as specified in DIN 51632, and modified with 30 to 65 % of unsaturated oil fatty acids, which has a hydroxyl number of 20-100 mg of KOH/g and an acid number of less than 10 mg of KOH/g.
