A hydrostatic drive system has hydrostatic work-performing machines with a variable intake or delivery volume which are coupled to small hydrostatic machines acting as a pump or motor as signal transmitters for the emission of a signal, determined by the rotational speed of the hydrostatic work-performing machines, for the device which adjusts the said work-performing machines. Via a metering unit, one of the two cylinder spaces of the actuating cylinder of the adjusting device is supplied with a flow of control oil which determines the setpoint value of the rotational speed of the associated hydrostatic work-performing machine. To increase the accuracy and responsiveness of rotational-speed control and at the same time improve the efficiency of the hydrostatic drive system, the metering unit, which is designed as an adjustable restrictor or flow regulator, is placed in the return of the flow of control oil. A controllable parallel flow can be taken past the signal transmitter and this can be used as an additional means of determining the rotational speed of the hydrostatic drive. In the case of an actuating cylinder with a continuous piston rod, the piston rod is subjected to an additional load in one direction of displacement or the other in accordance with the desired direction of rotation so as to determine the direction of rotation of the hydrostatic work-performing machine.
