The chuck has jaws (2), guided in the chuck body (1) and adjustable by a power-operated drive member (3), and power members (9) which additionally act on the chuck jaws (2) in their adjusting direction and produce a counterforce on the chuck jaws (2) which is opposed to the actuating force produced on the chuck jaws (2) by the drive member (3). When there is a slight chucking force on the workpiece, the counterforce permits such a high actuating force on the chuck jaws (2) that the friction specific to the chuck is no longer of any importance. <IMAGE>
