A first particulate material containing organic combustibles having heating values and inorganic non-combustibles are mixed with a second particulate material containing fluxstone in a ratio of about 4 to 7 parts to 1 part respectively and the mixture is charged with preheated air at a velocity of about 30 meters per second and a temperature of about 500 DEG C into a high temperature cyclone-like furnace. The combustibles are substantially instantaneously burned and the non-combustibles react with the fluxstone and melt to form a molten slag which can be processed into mineral wool containing between about 50 and 70 weight percent silica plus alumina, 20 and 35 weight percent lime plus magnesia, and 5 and 15 weight percent iron oxides. |
