The furnace comprises a hollow shell within which is an inner work-receving chamber enclosing a workpiece support and heat sources. A number of relatively small inlets(35,36)(39,40,43-47) in the lower part(18) of the chamber walls direct cooled gas towards the workpiece(9). Gas leaves the chamber(10) through a single, relatively large outlet(22) in the roof(23) of the chamber, and a low pressure, high volume impeller(30) located within the furnce causes gas to circulate through the inlets and over the work to the outlet, from where it returns to the inlets by way of cooling units(33,34) located in the space between chamber walls and outer shell.
