Styryl dyestuffs of the general formula <IMAGE> I wherein Het represents a pyridinium radical having the structure <IMAGE> R and R1 independently of one another designate lower alkyl or alkenyl groups, which can be substituted by non-ionic radicals, ring A can be substituted by C1- to C4-alkyl, ring B can be substituted by C1- to C4-alkyl, C1- to C4-alkoxy or halogen, D represents the remaining members of a 5-membered to 7-membered heterocyclic ring and An- represents an anion, are used for dyeing natural and synthetic substrates which can be dyed with cationic dyestuffs, in particular for beater-dyeing paper and for writing and printing on paper.
