PURPOSE:To prevent the chipping off of a catalyst carrier effectively by a method wherein a ring-like buffer plate is provided along the outer peripheral edge of the front end surface of the catalyst carrier. CONSTITUTION:A ring-like buffer plate 30 made of paper, resins or wire meshes is provided between the outer peripheral edge of the front end of a catalyst carrier 12 and the shoulder 104 of a case 10. The buffer plate 30 is not in direct contact with the front end surface 121 of the carrier 12 and the case 10 so that the carrier 12 is not chipped by the vibrations of the engine of an automobile or by an external force applied on the buffer plate 30 at the time of its assembly. Further, in case where the buffer plate 30 is made of paper or resins, it disappears due to the heat generating during the travelling of the automobile but the clearance between the front surface 121 and the shoulder 104 of the case 10 performs the function of preventing an exhaust gas from passing through the out er periphery of the carrier 12 of passing around the carrier 12 so that the carrier 12 is prevented from being damaged since the size of the clearance up to 3mm. does not make any difference from a contact condition. |
