PURPOSE:To protect a fuel cell from being poisoned at the time of system start, by constructing a by-path which has values in parallel on a fuel feeding path to the fuel cell, and by opening these valves at least at the starting time of the fuel treatment device. CONSTITUTION:At a starting time of the whole system, a starting fuel feed valve 15 is opened and a burner 4 is ignited in order to start the reforming reaction. Until the condition of the reformer reaches the rated state, the composition of the reformer fuel gas remains unstable. So there is a posibility that impure gas which lowers the activity of the catalyst for a fuel cell electrode is mixed in output gas. Here, valves 6 and 13 are closed, valve 18 is opened, and the initial gas, in that condition, is fed through the by-path from the fuel cell into the burner 4. When the reformer is shifted to the rated working condition, the valve 18 is closed and the valves 6 and 13 are opened, then the fuel cell is forced to perform generating action. As described the above, by constructing the by-path which has valves in parallel on the fuel feeding path to the fuel cell, desirable operating conditions can be maintained without allowing both the fuel cell and the fuel treatment device to exert a bad influence on each other. |
