In known devices of this kind, lengths of rope that are knotted together according to complicated systems, making use of eyes, holes, notches etc., are preferred as the means of connection. A disadvantage of this is that much time and skill is needed for mounting and dismounting the front piece (F). The connecting device according to the invention, by contrast, consists of a half-shell (1) having an amply dimensioned bearing surface corresponding to the cross-section of the mast (2) to receive the mast. This is open on the side facing away from the boom, so that the mast is pressed into the shell by the trimming forces of the sail. According to the innovation, the material of the shell (metal or plastic) and the fit of the bearing surface are designed so that the normal force (N) provides a sufficient elastic bracing between the shell and the mast. The innovation reduces the amount of time and skill needed for mounting and dismounting several-fold; the quality of the connection is improved, as well. <IMAGE>
