PURPOSE:To take out characters surely from a general document, by cutting a region surrounding isolate patterns, whose size in the main scanning direction and subscanning direction of the picture is within a prescribed range, out of extracted isolate patterns as one character region. CONSTITUTION:Density information of a read picture is converted to binary data by a binary part 10 and is sent to a density change detecting part 11, and changes of white and black picture elements are detected. The detection signal is sent to a run information converting part 12, and runs of black picture elements are discriminated, and addresses of the start and the terminal of each run are obtained, and the linkage of runs is decided. An isolate pattern extracting part 14 extracts runs of lines other than characters as isolate patterns and cuts a region surrounding isolate patterns, whose size in the main scanning direction and the subscanning direction of the picture is within a prescribed range, out of extracted isolate patterns as one character region through the cutting part 17. |
