PURPOSE:To obtain elements that permit determination of the position relations between thick films garnet and rod lenses without adjustment in the satage of assembling said elemens by polishing the surface of ferromagnetic iron garnet formed by liquid phase epitaxial to a flat surface. CONSTITUTION:After thick films of ferromagnetic iron garnet are grown by an opitaxial liquid phase on a nonmagnetic garnet substrate, the surfaces thereof are polished to flat surfaces. For example, a chip is cut out from a wafer formed by growing films of Gd0.2Y2.8Fe5O12 to a 160mum thickness on a nonmagnetic Gd3Ga5O12(111) substrate, and the surface thereof is polished by colloidal silica prepd. by dispersing SiO2 in a caustic soda soln. whereby the thickness of the garnet films is reduced to 145mum, and the surface is finished to a specular state. An optical isolator is assembled by disposing the chip between rod lenses 51 and 52 in such a way that the film surface 9 of the chip is in contact with a base plate 6. |
