Cylindrical electrodes are arranged axially side-by-side in an arc heating apparatus in such a manner that a gap is produced between them through which supply gas is introduced into an arc chamber. At least one ignition element projects into the gap in such a manner that it ends closer to the one electrode. An arc is triggered between the ignition element and the closest electrode in order to build up the arc between the two electrodes from this arc. Because of the shorter distance between the ignition element and the associated electrode, more favourable starting properties and an improved ignition characteristic are obtained, which can normally be achieved only in the case of arc heating apparatuses having a smaller gap. In addition, the power requirement for the arc heating apparatus is minimised.
