The print head (2) can be moved continuously and incrementally in guide rods (3) in the line direction. A motor-driven guiding spindle (7) is used for its adjustment and is connected rigidly to the motor shaft (10) and the timing disc (9). The connection between the guiding spindle and the carriage (1) bearing the print head is produced by a guiding nut (13) which engages with a projection (22) in a recess (15) on the carriage and at the same time is supported against being rotated by the guiding spindle by engagement on a guide rod. This prevents vibrations of conventional drive systems with transmission wire, toothed belt or spindle being transmitted to the carriage and thus to the print head. <IMAGE>
