In the production of mirrors with image elements, ornaments, text or the like applied to the mirror glass, the pattern of the image is formed on the mirror by means of a pressure and/or covering method and recesses are formed, in dependence on the patterns of the images, on the sheet of glass forming the mirror, before the reflective coating is applied. These recesses either represent the pattern of the image themselves, because this surface is dull, or, however, the said recesses receive a coloured coating, the thickness of which is less than the depth of the recesses, so that the image elements of the image pattern do not project beyond the original glass surface. This prevents scratching of the image elements, but it also makes time-consuming and expensive drying of the coloured coating unnecessary in particular.
