The device for coupling an infrared diode to an individual glass fibre used as an optical waveguide has a coupling sleeve into which it is possible to insert from one side a cylindrical pin which contains the end section of an optical waveguide, and from the other side a diode base having a diode attached to the end face thereof. The plug-in depth of the pin, which is limited by a collar on the cylindrical pin, is dimensioned such that starting from a desired value it can only be smaller by up to approx. 40 mu m than the desired value. The diode base is designed in such a way that the minimum distance from the diode end face to the collar of the cylindrical pin which acts as a stop when said pin is inserted into the coupling sleeve is at least 10 mu m larger than the desired value, but exceeds the desired value by at most 20 mu m. This ensures in an uncomplicated way that the end face of the cylindrical pin is entirely unable to contact the diode and risk damaging it.
