For 4-cylinder in-line engines, particularly in the case of inclined installation, for example as a transverse engine, to balance (compensate for) 2nd order mass forces, at a low cost. The two balancing shafts (5, 6) are arranged symmetrically alongside the centre main bearing (2), away from the cylinder. The balancing shafts (5, 6) revolve, as is normal, at twice the rotation speed. The resultant force of their unbalances (7, 8) opposes the second order mass force of the engine and completely balances it out. Quiet running and, primarily, idle running of the engine. The balancing shafts (5, 6) are arranged in a space-saving manner in the space which is free at the bottom in an inclined manner in the case of a (transverse) engine which is installed inclined. The normal long balancing shafts and their complex (costly) drive are obviated. <IMAGE>
