Identity card with IC chips for the processing of electrical signals. The IC chip and the conductor tracks and contact surfaces necessary for operating the chip are fastened on a separate carrier in such a way and are embedded in the identity card in such a way that the IC chip lies in a region of the card of maximum permissible thickness, whereas the contact surfaces are arranged outside this region. The placement of the IC chip in the raised card region (for example embossing region) allows thicker encapsulation of the chip with correspondingly improved protection against mechanical loads. On the other hand, the region of the carrier element with the contact surfaces is accommodated outside the raised card region, for example in the magnetic strip region. Since the carrier element can be made very thin in the region of the contact surfaces, its installation in the region of the magnetic strip of the card presents no problems in terms of production. Finally, this unproblematical installation of the thin contact-surface or conductor-track region arranged on the carrier element separately from the IC chip allows a very variable design of the contact surfaces in their dimensions and in their position on the identity card.
