The invention relates to a method and a device for precompressing pipes having a relatively small internal diameter, using the known pipe precompression method. According to the invention, a leading operating pipe (17) is initially precompressed over the complete precompression extent using the pipe precompression method, its internal diameter being selected such that the operating pipe can be passed through and space for the accommodation of the necessary machine devices being available in the operating pipe. Subsequently, the operating pipe (17) is passed out towards the end of the precompression extent and is replaced on the precompression extent by the final pipeline (25, 27) whose internal diameter is smaller than that of the outer pipe (17).
