A keyboard particularly suitable for use with computers, of the kind having a matrix of character keys which are scanned by a scanning circuit to determine which key has been pressed at any instant. The keyboard has at least one shift or "control" key which is also included in the matrix, so that the state of the shift key or keys can be determined without the necessity for separate sensing lines and so that different keys can be designated as shift keys according to the requirement of a particular application.
