A process for the double-bond isomerization of olefins with minimal skeletal isomerization in which one or more olefins are contacted under isomerization conditions with a catalyst comprising partially hydrated chromium sulphate on a porous inert siliceous support. The catalyst is prepared by impregnating the porous support with an aqueous chromium sulphate solution, drying, and activating at a temperature ranging from 120 DEG C to 240 DEG C.
