PURPOSE:To exactly detect the error of a carriage by using a system in which the error of the carriage is judged by comparing the pulse number required when restoring the carriage from stop position to reference position with the pulse number stored in a carrage position memory. CONSTITUTION:A carriage provided with a printing head, a pulse motor 20 to drive the carriage, a drive control means 19 to controllably drive the motor 20, and a sensor 21 to detect the position of the carriage at a reference position are provided. The pulse number sent the pulse motor 20 in order to drive the carriage from the reference position to stop position by the drive control means 19 is stored by a carriage position memory 16, and in case where the feeding of data is still stopped even after the lapse of a given period of time since the stoppage of sending printing data from a host computer 11, the carriage is set back from stop position to reference position, and the error of the carriage is judged by comparing the pulse number required for the restoration of the carriage with the pulse number stored in the carriage position memory. |
