In order to avoid the need for manual operations which call for considerable skill on the part of the worker, the tooth of the saw blade (22) to which the coating is to be fixed is held in place between a pair of plates (32, 34) which, in the state in which they are brought close together, form a seat (36) for forming and shaping the coating, the seat (36) containing the surface (38) of the tooth to which the coating is to be welded. The welding operation is carried out with plates (32, 34), brought close together, by a welding torch (42) with an arc of high temperature, in particular a TIG welding torch, with a given quantity of stellite, in particular stellite pellets (40) which are fed to the seat (36) formed by the plates (32, 34) brought close together and are melted there. <IMAGE>
