<p>The plant item is of the type which consists mainly of a tall, vertical, cylindrical vessel which is subdivided into a number of superimposed compartments by spaced, diametral partitions. Each partition is coned very slightly towards a central apex. A coaxial, rotary agitator shaft extends through all partitions to rotate a paddle in each compartment. A recycling/mixing pump transfers juice between each adjacent pair of compartments. Each compartment contains its own pump comprising an axial flow impeller on a vertical shaft housed in an open-ended tube near the wall of the vessel and extending through a oartition. Several impellers are fixed coaxially on a common shaft. The shaft pref. extends through the cover of the vessel to couple with a variable speed drive. The installation is used to purify sugar by liming treatment. Construction is simplified and cost reduced because a separate drive is no longer necessary for each pump. The speeds of all pumps on a common shaft can be adjusted simultaneously.</p> |
