<p>Sandy soil is compacted by forcing a vertical metallic rod (16) into the ground using a vibrating mechanism (22). A flat horizontally disposed plate (28) is secured to the upper end of the rod (16) so that at the end of the compacting operation the plate is situated below the level of the soil. The plate is pref. square in shape having sides of length which is 2 to 5 times greater than the largest cross-sectional dimension of the rod. The rod is pref. I-shaped in cross-section, the major axis of which measures 200mm.</p> |
