Foamed plastic-insulated elec. cable with improved elec. and mech. properties was manufd. by extrusion coating a conductor with a layer of foamed plastic contg. 20% plastic material of swelling ratio >=55% and an optional solid plastic insulator layer of PE or PP. Thus, Cu wire was coated with a insulating layer of low-d. PE contg. 1.5% azodicarbonamide blowing agent to give a foamed layer of swelling ratio 67.2%, expansion degree 65.4%, and cell size<=50μwith good bonding to the conductor.
