PURPOSE:To prevent any blackening of the electrode of an electric discharge lamp caused by residual carbon contained in an electron discharging matter (an emitter), and improve the reduction of the luminous flux caused as the lighting of the lamp proceeds by applying mixture consisting of the said emitter and a volatile solvent containing no binders to the said electrode before sintering is performed. CONSTITUTION:During the applying process of an emitter, any binder is not used, and only a volatile matter such as pure water is used as a solvent. At first, ThO2 powder used as the above emitter is mixed with water, and the supernatant liquid of the mixture is removed because ThO2 powder precipitates. Next, after an electrode prepared by winding an inner and an outer coil 2 and 3 around an electrode core bar 1 is stood upright, a ThO2 briquette 4 thus obtained and containing water is applied to the end of the electrode, and several drops of water is poured onto the briquette 4. As the result, the briquette 4 moves down with water, and permeates into the spaces of the electrode coils 2 and 3. After that, the electrode is heated in a stream of nitrogen. |
