A crude gas obtained from coal and containing 6 to 30% by volume of methane, such as, for example, coke oven gas, is reformed with steam, by introducing it into a gasification zone while maintaining it at the high temperature at which it has been produced, without subjecting it to a cooling treatment for separating off and removing the higher hydrocarbon compounds such as, for example, the tarry constituents contained therein, or to a treatment for removing constituents other than the solid impurities. The crude gas is contacted with a sintered catalyst, which contains calcium oxide and aluminium oxide, in the presence of steam. This gives a hydrogen-enriched gas from the crude gas by the effective gasification of methane, straight-chain lower hydrocarbons and higher hydrocarbon compounds, which are contained therein. |
