A method of supporting the rotor of a rotating knife granulating machine incorporates a conventional inboard barrel roller bearing with a preloaded outboard bearing acting as a cantilever to compensate for loads arising during cutting. Previously the knives of rotary knife machines had to be set up with sufficient clearance that the rotating and fixed knives should not touch each other during operation under working load. By preloading the rotor by an amount greater than the loads to be encountered in operation, it is possible to set the knives up to operate closer together. Used for granulation and cutting machines, the smaller clearances enable finer granulation to be obtained.
|
