PURPOSE:To manufacture a single-polarization single-mode optical fiber with superior linearly polarizing characteristics by arranging an even number except 2 of glass rods for applying stress around a base material for a core and by heating and drawing them together with a glass pipe for a jacket. CONSTITUTION:A base material 4 for a core formed by covering glass 5 for a core with glass 6 for a synthetic clad, glass rods 7, 8 for applying stress and glass rods 9, 10 for applying stress are arranged in a glass pipe 11 for a jacket as shown by the figure. In this state, the glass pipe 11 is melted by heating to 2,000 deg.C with a resistance heating furnace and drawn to manufacture the desired single-polarization single-mode optical fiber. The glass 5 consists of GeO2 and SiO2, and the glass 6 is made of SiO2. Ths glass rods 7, 8 are made of B2O3- SiO2 glass, and the glass rods 9, 10 are made of TiO2-SiO2 glass. |
