Method of cleaning SO2 from SO2-containing smoke or exhaust gases, in which method a flow of the SO2- containing gas is brought together by a wet-dry process with a finely divided water-containing slurry of solid particulate carbonate of an alkaline earth metal, preferably limestone, and taken along with this finely divided slurry to a filter arranged to capture the resulting solid products of the reaction between carbonate and SO2 and unreacted carbonate. Into the reaction medium for SO2 and carbonate is introduced a dissolved cobalt salt in a quantity of at least 0.2 wt.percent and preferably at least 0.7 wt.percent, calculating for the quantity of carbonate, which favours the oxidation of the sulphur to sulphate and assures a high degree of cleaning with regard to SO2. <IMAGE> |
