The invention relates to a control device which is activated by pressure medium and is used for a double-acting working cylinder, in particular for machine tools. The control device has a first multi-directional valve, via which the chambers of the working cylinder can be connected alternatingly to a pressure medium source. The first multi-directional valve is controlled via a second multi-directional valve, which is attached at the two outlets of a switching valve connected to the pressure medium source. The outlets of a third multi-directional valve are in communication with the control inlets of the second multi-directional valve, and the control inlets of the third multi-directional valve are connected to in each case one chamber of the working cylinder. The direction of movement of the working piston is determined in this way as a function of the control signals of the switching valve and the return signals delivered from the third multi-directional valve from the chambers of the working cylinder.
