The invention relates to a fuel injection nozzle with a nozzle needle which, in addition to a throttle pintle tapering towards the combustion chamber side, has a needle step lying between pressure chamber and valve seat in a bore in the nozzle body, which needle step is also designed tapering towards the combustion chamber side and together with the nozzle body forms an annular gap. This additional control function results in knock-free engine operation without susceptibility to faults even when the throttle gap formed by the throttle pintle and the outlet duct is coked up and the engine is in the cold starting phase.
